Remain patient, and don't order one of these until one of the electical experts shows up here. They will explain why certain 'generators' (they'll explain generators and inverters and batteries, perhaps) have the wrong kind of wave form to properly run flash units. What I know, in broad strokes, is the machines for power saws don't work with flash units. What do you mean by 'don't have enough power'?They won't recharge fast enough, or won't recharge enough times, or won't let the modeling lights be bright enough?BAK. Delviswrote:I have a ab vagabond 1 which I use sometimes, but seems not to have enough power at times even after replacing the battery. I was looking at this unitWhat do you guys use?My lighting is two ab1600 and one ab ringflashThat unit puts out what is called a 'Modified sine wave' and is not compatible with any AB flash. The problem is that the high voltage boost circuit relies on a pure sine wave and can overheat (amongst other things) when used with a modified sine wave.
This all has to do with the high frequency component (harmonics) found in modified sine waves and not in pure sine waves.Another reason not to go with that unit would be the questionable reviews on Amazon.com. Regardless, do not use an inverter that produces a modified sine wave. It may work for some period of time, but would be a significant risk in terms of damaging your lights. The Innovatronix Explorer XT is another pure sine wave inverter that gets positive mention.-Gene L. You are showing a portable battery with inverter. It looks nice, but it will only power a 500ws studio flash unit. It will not power a 1500ws studio flash unit. You need 2.5x the flash unit wattage rating for the portable battery unit.A better choice is a Speedotron Explorer 1500ws portable studio flash unit.
Go to:With this unit, you can re-charge it using a cheap portable gas 2-cycle generator such as a $99 special at your auto store. The Speedotron Explorer will charge at 2amps rate. It will not need a portable generator any larger than a unit which can output 2 amps. You need to know there is a difference between an AC studio flash that gets all its power from AC and a studio flash that gets all its power from a battery. Each one needs a different amount of AC to charge or activate the unit.
The battery powered flash unit needs less portable AC power. You should call Speedotron in Chicago and talk to their techs. They will tell you how much power you need to power what you need. You are better off with a battery powered unit that can be recharged with AC. Do that rather than use a 100% AC unit connected to a gas generator whether it is pure sine wave or not. You see, the battery unit is much more efficient, and all the load is placed on batteries which are designed to be loaded excessively by their design. You will need a 5000watts generator to use 2400ws AC pack at minimum. There may be a sophisticated way around this minimum using pure sine wave or other designs (by alienbees).
But the bottom line is, you are adding on alot of expensive and weight and hardware when you use a huge AC generator to power a AC studio flash.Again, buy a battery powered flash, whether it is studio flash or portable flash, then re-charge the batteries of the unit using a small gas generator or even the cigarette outlet on your car. With Speedotron, you can do this. Pure sine wave is necessary for power tools for full power. It isn't necessary for all flash units. For example, Speedotron units can be powered without Pure Sine Wave features. You simply get a little less output, that is all. Car photographers use 20 big 2400ws packs and they are all powered by a huge towable generator that is not pure sine wave.Anyway, you should call the manufacturer to make the 'pure sine wave or modified sine wave or square wave' issue plain to you.
Don't just take advice on the internet.Pure sine wave is the most expensive and it will power anything. Modified square wave is more 'imperfect' electricity; and 'square wave' is the most 'imperfect' electricity. YOu need to study electricity to know.
I have a White Linghting Ring Flash with 1250 watt power pack and the Vagabond II. I also have used the Tronix ExplorerXT wiht the ring flash. Tronix has a compatability chart with units they have tested and their unit appears to have a little more power than the Vagabond II.Both uints have a pure sine wave inverter and have worked fine but I don't connect more than one light to each so I get over 300 shots with either the Vagabond ii or Explorer XT. It's a toss up over which one is better - they both do the job.regards.
